He was the son of Samuel O. Barber and Mary Fielder Barber of Philadelphia. They moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1885. Samuel was a physician and the president of the West Chester school board for twenty-five years. The husband of Marguerite Beatty, he was the father of Sara Barber Beatty and composer Samuel Barber, and had two grandchildren at the time of his death. Besides the family, he was also survived by a sister Ada Strode. His sister Linda McFarland died in 1946 and his brother C. Harry Barber died in 1939. His name was often written S. Leroy Barber. He died after a long illness in his home at 107 S. Church Street in West Chester.
