Brigham Erastus Stone was born in Surry County, North Carolina to Jane Elizabeth King and Calvin Stone. His parents raised 16 children including one they adopted and Brigham was child number seven. Brigham grew up in Pilot Mountain North Carolina. His parents were contacted by the Mormon missionaries in 1851 and in time they and all their children were baptized members of that church. As a teenager Brigham helped his father farm. His father suffered with arthritis and on September 11th 1876 at the age of 55 years, Calvin Gordon Stone died. Brigham was one of the last of his siblings to be baptized on March 15th 1876 at age twenty. Brigham had a strong testimony and reported the following vision in his own words but we are unclear when this experience occurred: "In answer to prayer I received the following: A messenger appeared to me in a vision or dream and held a large roll of large sized papers in his arms and turned them all over in front of my eyes, and I saw the original language of the book and also the English. It seemed to be inter-lined throughout with English, a line of the original under which appeared an inter-line of English. I was shown the entire volume in both languages and I have no doubt as to the divinity of the Book of Mormon, for I saw it in its original language and in English and I believe it was shown me by the power of God, as I had sought Him for light on this question."
Brigham moved to Utah where he met and married Nancy Oyler on May 3rd 1879. Brigham recieved his endowments and was sealed to Nancy Olyler on September 25th 1879 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City.

Nancy and Brigham Stone had nine children:

1. Brigham Erastus Stone Jr. was born on March 7th 1880 in Payson, Utah. Was sealed to Ella Malissa Winward on November 6th 1907 in the Salt Lake Temple. Died May 11th 1965.
2. Delilah Jane Stone (Larsen) was born on September 16th 1881 in Payson, Utah. She married Isaac Jacob Larsen December 9th 1903 in the Salt Lake Temple. Died May 22nd 1974.
3. Clara May Stone was born on June 11th 1883 in Payson, Utah. She died June 8th 1886.
4. Zina Elizabeth Stone (Hanks) was born October 15th 1885 in Salem, Utah. Married George William Hanks on February 19th 1908 in the Salt Lake Temple. Died November 1st 1971.
5. Alma Gordon Stone was born August 7th 1888 in Salem, Utah. Married Lucy Tuttle Kell Novemeber 17th 1909 in the Salt Lake Tameple. Alma died June 4th 1970.
6. Nancy Evaline Stone (Gardner) was born September 26th 1891 in Salem, Utah. She married William Edward Gardner on May 26th 1908.
They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple January 11th 1911. She died June 27th 1978.
7.Cloa Arbell Stone (Sheffield) was born November 9th 1894 in Salem, Utah. Died December 2nd 1894.
8. Ammon Oliver Stone was born July 9th 1895 in Salem, Utah. Married Roycie Sheffield on January 31st 1917 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died June 12th 1977.
9. Ida Blanche Stone (Jones) was born January 3rd 1903 in Salem, Utah. Married Llewellyn Oliver Jones March 28th 1934. Died January 18th 1943.
