James Carl Bradway, son of James Walter and Melissa Bradway, was born in Waverly, Illinois October 11th 1897. He spent the first ten years of his life in Waverly, then moved with his parents to Virden, where he lived until three years ago when he and his mother went to Tampa, Florida.
Carl graduated from the Virden High School in June, 1915. He then entered Milikin University at Decatur, Illinois, where he finished a three and one half years course in accountancy.
After finishing school he helped his father in the management of the Virden Grain Co. and took complete charge at his father's death.
In 1922 he gave this up and opened a drug store in Virden. He, with the help of his mother operated this until 1925, when they sold out and moved to Tampa, Florida, where he became an accountant for Collier's Steamship Line at Everglades City, Florida.
He met his death in an automobile accident while returning home, which severed his spine.
In 1919 Carl joined the Baptist church of Virden, of which he was a loyal member. He was a member of the American Legion and the Modern Woodmen of America.
His father preceded him in death in 1922. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Melissa Bradway of Tampa, Florida, and one sister, Mrs. J. E. White of Springfield.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Shutt of this city at 10:30 Thursday morning conducted by Rev. H. A. Belton of Springfield, a former pastor of the Virden Baptist Church. Members of Waverly Post of the American Legion attended the funeral in a body.
Interment was in East Cemetery.
