Dr. Rolla D. Campbell Jr., 88, of Hobe Sound and Fishers Island, NY died Saturday, Feb. 16. He was a native of Huntington, WV.
He spent many years in private practice at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and the New York Roosevelt Hospital. He was an orthopedic surgeon in the Army's Medical Corps in Phoenixville, PA.
He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University and the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. In college, he was a leading middle-distance and track star and continued distance running into his forties, finishing with the Boston Marathon at the age of 46. He was a member of several notable groups of orthopedic surgeons. He also lectured frequently and pioneered a special golf fitness center and swing clinic in Tequesta. He was a member of several leading golf clubs in this country and abroad, including the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and the Honorable Company of Edinborough Golfers (Murifield, Scotland). He served as board chairman for several years of the Palm Beach Zoo and was a board member for the past 20 years. He was instrumental in starting an animal hospital, which is now being built as part of the Animal Wellness Center at the Palm Beach Zoo.
Survivors include his wife; four children; two step-children; a brother; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23 at Christ Memorial Chapel, Jupiter Island. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvator Zeitlin Animal Hospital at the Palm Beach Zoo.
