Fort Payne Journal - 23 Feb 1938
Mrs Margaret Maddox Sizemore was born in Hall County, Georgia in the year 1852, was married in 1873 and moved with her husband, Andy Sizemore, and her three sons, John, William and Elijah Sizemore to DeKalb County, in 1895. Like many other families from Georgia and the Carolinas during the 19th century, they followed the setting sun to Sand Mountain, established homes and made substantial contribution to the civic, political and religious life of the communities in which they settled.

Soon after arrival of this family in Alabama, the husband and father died, the three sons having taken to themselves wives surrounding communities, the widowed mother, the subject of this article, was left alone. For now these forty years she has lived among her children and friends, working arduously as long as her strength would permit. For some fifteen years of this time, she lived in the home of Dr D W Wilson of Tenbroeck, where after the death of the Doctor's first wife, she became foster mother to his children, contributing largely to their growth, character and development. For the last several years she has made her home with her only surviving son, John Sizemore, near Fyffe.

This good woman gave her heart to Jesus Christ at the age of 12 and soon thereafter joined the Baptist church where she has remained a true and faithful Christian throughout the long years of her life. On February 18th, 1938, her spirit joined that of her husband and her sons, William and Elijah in the land where we never grow old, after having attained her to the ripe old age of four score and five years, two months and eighteen days.

The writer having known this good woman for forty years, having had her as member of his own family in his own home, having observed her constancy, her firmness, her determination and strong Christian character, can find nothing more fitting to say of her than that she is a noble mother, and that her passing ushers her into a richly deserved reward.

Surviving to mourn she leaves one son, John Sizemore and his wife, Mrs Sallie Sizemore, widow of William B Sizemore, deceased, Mrs Emma Sizemore Liles, former widow of Elijah Sizemore, deceased, two sisters, eighteen grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, together with a host of other relatives and friends.

At 12:00 o'clock, Saturday, Feb 19th, her body was tenderly laid to rest from Mt Pleasant Church, beside that of her husband, with the Rev Melvin Johnson, Rev Robert Isdel and Rev H N G Rains officiating. Pallbearers and Flower girls were taken from that host of grandsons and granddaughters. Bartlett Funeral Home of Fort Payne in charge of the last sad rites.
