Sr. Anne Christine (Simms) explained that her Grandmother (Sarah Ann (Lee) Frye) poured kerosene on a fire (probably was cooking as thats how they did it back then - usually in a big fireplace, over logs) on Thanksgiving (something went wrong) and (Sarah Ann (Lee) Frye) was so badly burned that she passed away a few days later. Her husband (William Kellar Frye) tried to save her and his hands were burned as well. He raised the two older girls ( Mary Grace Frye and Blanche Christina Frye) but didn't feel that he could adequately care for Goldie (Goldie Vernon Frye) who was... (only three years) at the time. Goldie (later) went to live with Uncle Joe Lee and that is why she went by Goldie Lee instead of (Goldie) Frye.
