Juanita Buchanan LoEwenstein
She was a Scottish-Mexican born to an affluent Catholic family. She married Moritz LoEwenstein a who had been a partner with her father the U.S. Consul to El Paso del Norte Mexico on May 10, 1873, Old Spanish Mission in Ysleta, Tx.
It is said she had 21 children of which only 12 grew to adulthood.
Limited information on her other than she was a veritable dynamo known to everyone in her community. She ran the business and managed all the children. Moritz was gone close to eight months a year.
She was left to manage everything. El Paso Times Herald writes, "Mrs. Juana Buchanan LoEwenstein was known as, La Madre de Ysleta". Translated means The Mother of Ysleta. "known as the prettiest girl on the Rio Grande". **"Her home was the gathering place for legislators & politicians of early days".
Her grand children remember that her house was a Palatial Spanish style Mansion with imported chandeliers and red velvet drapes.
She was always involved in charity helping those not a fortunate in the Ysleta community. She and Moritz always left a 100 lb sack of pinto beans at their back gate for anyone of need, hence she was known by the community as the "Little Mother Of Ysleta."
