SAMUEL BERRY PORTERFIELD enlisted as a Private in the Union in the Civil War. He was assigned to Company A, Ohio 25th Infantry Regiment on 5 Jun 1861 and mustered out on 23 Mar 1962 at Corryville, Maryland.

Samuel Porterfield was married twice. He and his first wife, Agnes Muir Percy, had four children: James P., David W., Agnes Muir, and John F. Porterfield. All four children were born in Ohio.

Samuel and his second wife, Lucinda Lovine DeLong, had three known children: Charles Sumner, Nervanna "Vancie" Eleanor, and Estella Mary Porterfield. Charles and Nervanna were born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, but Estella Mary was born in Michigan.

Samuel and Lucinda made Michigan their home until their deaths.
