George Wilson Horton

George Wilson Horton of Lake Charles, Louisiana passed away on Monday, October 13, 2014.
George was born on the nineteenth of October, 1918 in McDade, Louisiana to William Charles Horton and Ella Dee Horton. As a young boy George stayed in Bossier Parish until the United States entered into World War II. In 1941 George quickly enlisted in the United States Air Force with the ambition to fly powered aircraft and was accepted as an enlisted pilot in training. However, George was selected for something new and different. While attending preflight training in Brady, Texas, an officer pointed George out for glider training. After completing the glider flight training course, George earned a commission as a second lieutenant and became a glider pilot instructor.
During these troubled times George met the love of his life, Martha Jo Crider of Muskogee, Oklahoma. The two married in Shreveport, Louisiana and together had six children. George and Martha were married for 49 years before Martha's death in 1991.In 1946 George left service, but remained in the Reserves . George was recalled to duty for the Korean War, serving as personnel officer for a B-29 unit on Okinawa, Japan. After 24 years of service, George retired from the United States Air Force with a rank of major. Relocating to Lake Charles, Louisiana George opened new businesses. George was the owner of Horton's Appliance and Horton Trucking.
George was preceded in death by his parents William Charles and Ella Dee Horton and his siblings: Thelma Horton Tooke, Mamie Dee Horton Hand, Audrey Horton Blackstock, Mary Bryant Horton Haygood, Charlie Dee Horton, and W.H. Horton. George is survived by his children: Charlotte Pamela Horton Liles and husband James Ray , George David ( Buddy) Horton and wife Jackie Marie, Janie Jo Horton Leboeuf, Robin Wilson Horton, Mindy Lou Horton, John William Horton and wife Mary Ellen; three stepchildren, Steve Landry, Allen Landry and Susan Landry; grandchildren, Kimberly Jo Liles Crouchet, Joshua Dawson Liles, Jennifer Marie Horton Breakfield, Jody Brandon Horton , Tristan Lee Horton along with eight great grandchildren: Braden Pierce Crouchet, Amelia Grace Crouchet, Ellison Paige Crouchet, Madeline Isabel Arrendondo, Kenley Emersen Liles, Berklie Rylen Liles, Bailey Renee Breakfield, Audrey Marie Breakfield, Eleanor Marie Horton. George is also survived by his loving wife Joann Landry Horton.
Funeral services will be at 9:00 AM Friday, October 17, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will resume from 8:00 AM until time of service Friday, October 17, 2014. A graveside service for burial will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, October 17, 2014 at Filmore Cemetery in Haughton,LA. Rev. Tom Bruce will officiate services.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are: Tristan Lee Horton, Jody Brandon Horton, Joshua Dawson Liles, Necel Edmond Breakfield, James Ray Liles, and Robert James Crouchet.
