Mernie was a World War I soldier, dying from fatal injuries on November 20, 1918 near "Landres St. Georges" and temporarily buried near "La Dhuy farm". His remains were moved to the cemetery in "Landres St. Georges" and then to the Argenne American Cemetery in "Romagne sous Montfaucon". Later his remains were moved to "Port d'Anvers" (Port of Antwerp), transported on the ship Cantigny bound for Hoboken N.J., and finally buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery (this info. courtesy of contributor Pierre Egret).
