Mary Bigham Knox, 95, a resident of Gettysburg, Pa., and a longtime resident of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., died Monday evening, March 18, 2013, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, Md., where she had lived since 2011.
Born Feb. 11, 1918, in Gettysburg, Mary was the daughter of the late James L. and Beulah F. (Horner) Bigham.
She grew up on the family farm in Freedom Township. She graduated from Gettysburg High School and from the Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia as a registered nurse.
She began her career working at the New York City Hospital as a hospital nurse. On July 28, 1941, she married Frederick V. Knox in Baltimore, Md. During World War II, while her husband was overseas in the Navy, she worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At the end of the war, she became a full-time mother, and she and her husband raised four children. She returned to work in 1963 as a nurse at Western Maryland Center in Hagerstown, Md., until retiring in 1983.
She was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church while she lived in Blue Ridge Summit. After the death of her husband in 1987, she moved to Gettysburg. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Gettysburg.
She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. She loved the beauty of nature, the outdoors and animals of all kinds. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her four children,
Frederick Knox Jr. and his wife, Darnell, of Nashville, Tenn.,
Theodore Knox and his wife, Lauralee, of Gettysburg,
David Knox and his wife, Renee, of Gettysburg, and
Mary Sue Knox of Raleigh, N.C.;
her six grandchildren,
Frederick Knox III,
Jennifer Knox,
Theo Knox,
August Knox,
Richard Turner and
Haley Quillen-Knox;
three great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by
two sisters,
Margaret Bigham Bietler and
Eleanor Stoops Mueller; and
two brothers,
James W. Bigham and
Kenneth Bigham.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 25 W. High St., Gettysburg, with the Rev. Bernardo Pistone as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield, Pa.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 22, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg.
