THE SABETHA HERALD (Sabetha, Kansas)- Wednesday, May 11, 1927- Page 9.
(Republican Thursday.)- MRS. SHINTAFFER PASSES AWAY
Mrs. Mary Ann Shintaffer passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martin Klein in Sabetha Wednesday, May 4, after an illness of nine months. She was a pioneer citizen of this community and spent practically all her life here, coming to brown county when a small girl.

Mary Ann Ramsey was born at Platte County, Nebraska (sic-Missouri) and came to Kansas with her mother, her father having passed away, when she was five years old. They went to the home of the little girls uncle, Robert Carpenter. The farm was on the County Line and is now owned by Fred Deaver. Here she lived until her marriage, August 21, 1872. They owned three eighties but moved in the spring of 1873 to the farm now worked by her son, Arthur Shintaffer. It was a prairie farm with few improvements at that time and for fifteen years they lived there with their near neighbors. They were successful progressive farmers and broke the prairie and improved the farm until it is now one of the attractive farm residences of Brown county. Mr. Shintaffer died in 1922 and Mrs. Shintaffer continued to live on the farm with her son, Arthur. She became ill August 12, 1926 and was taken to the hospital at St. Joe. After three weeks she was brought back to the home of Arthur Shintaffer somewhat improved. She grew worse however and was brought to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martin Klein in Sabetha to be near a doctor. After months of suffering she passed away in spite of the tended care of her children and grandchildren. She had reached the age of 72 years, 5 months and 17 days, having filled her life with kindly service. She was a helpful neighbor and friend, a good wife and mother.

Mrs. Shintaffer with her husband joined the Baptist church of Fairview in 1889 and remained a faithful member until her death. She was the last member of her family to cross the Great Divide and she is survived by five children: Mrs. Martin Klein, Mrs. Clemens Wenpe, Arthur Shintaffer, Mrs. Anna Plaman and Mrs. Mary Spellmeier, all of this vicinity. Three of her children died in infancy and her daughter, Mrs. Z. J. Bell, in 1923. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Marin Klein on East Main street at 2:30, conducted by Rev. E. L. Painter assisted by Rev. E. E. Beauchamp. Burial was in the family lot in Sabetha Cemetery.
