Widow of Owen R. Owens, 86, Dies ~ Resident of City All Her Life ~ Funeral To Be Saturday.
Mrs. Clara G. Nott Owens, of Apartment 214, Hotel Woodruff, widow of Owen R. Owens and a resident of this city all her life, died at 9:05 this morning in the Mercy hospital, where she had been a patient since Monday afternoon.
Death was attributed to a coronary thrombosis with which she was stricken a few hours before her death. Mrs. Owens had been ill since February, chiefly of infirmities of old age.
The funeral will be Saturday afternoon at 2 at the Cleveland Funeral home. Reverend Dr. Harold H. Niles, pastor of the All Souls Universalist church, will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in Brookside cemetery.
A sister, Mrs. May E. Frake, also of the Hotel Woodruff, widow of Clifford H. Frake, survives. Another sister, Miss Grace B. Nott, formerly of 326 Clay street, died here November 18, 1945, at the age of 77 years.
Her husband, who served as supervisor of the Fourth ward for 16 years and was for years an insurance and real estate broker here, died January 10, 1942, in the House of the Good Samaritan at the age of 75 years. He was also a former member of the Jefferson County Alcoholic Beverage Control board and a one-time chairman of the Republican county committee. Mr. and Mrs. Owens lived for years at 320 Winslow street.
Mrs. Owens was born in this city September 22, 1871, a daughter of the late J. Wallace and Georgia Benjamin Nott. She was a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Benjamin, early residents of the town of Hounsfield.
Her father was for years a prominent druggist of this city for 47 years owning and operating a drug store in the old Nott Block which stood at the east end of Public Square, near the First Baptist Church. He died in June 1916.
Her paternal grandfather, the late Reuben Nott, and his six sons once operated the old American house, an early Watertown hotel which stood on the site of the present Woolworth building. Reuben Nott at one time Somerville, St. Lawrence county farmer, was elected sheriff of that county in 1853 but in 1861 took over the management of the American house here.
Mrs. Owens was educated in the old Lamon street school. The Nott family at the time lived in lower State street. She was married to Owen R. Owens of this city April 12, 1893 in a ceremony performed at the Nott family home, 531 State street, by Reverend L. R. Libby, then pastor of the Universalist church.
Mr. Owens was for 37 years a partner of the late John R. Pawling in the insurance firm of Pawling and Owens. In memory of her husband, Mrs. Owens, in 1948 gave the Owens Memorial Bells installed in All Souls Universalist church.
The carillonic bells, 25 in number, were dedicated at the Palm Sunday service in March, 1948. Mrs. Owens had been a member of the Universalist church virtually all of her life, and as long as her health permitted, she was active in church circles. She was one of the oldest members of the church and also of the Association of Universalist women.
