Marie W. Coughlin


Marie W. Coughlin, 103, of 400 Highland St. died on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Kent officiating. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery in Abingdon.

Family visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Behner Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Packwood Library.

Mrs. Coughlin was born Oct. 20, 1897, Batavia, the daughter of Ransom and Edna B. Ives Whitmore. She married Louis V. Coughlin May 25, 1924, in Burlington. He died in January 1961.

She lived most of her life in southeast Iowa except for 15 years when she lived in Chicago, Ill. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1916 and Parsons College with a bachelor's degree and was com[sic] laude in her class in 1955. She taught in Jefferson County rural schools, Libertyville, Packwood and Lockridge. She retired 1969 after teaching 16 years in Keokuk community schools. After her retirement, she did baby-sitting in the Fairfield community.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Jefferson County Retired Teachers, Log Cabin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Packwood Sew and So Club.

She is survived by three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred Hicks of Fairfield and Kathryn Robinson of Washington, Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Louis; one son, Louis V. Coughlin, Jr.; four sisters, Margaret Gantz, Pauline Whitmore, Frances Johnston and Florence Faas; and two brothers, Cephas and Ralph Whitmore.
