EVENING KANSAN-REPUBLICAN, Newton, Kansas, Tuesday, Jan. 15, 1918
JACK MABERY DIED RESULT OF BURNS
Jack Mabery succumbed today about 1:00 o'clock to the burns received early Friday morning at Towanda when a gas stove in his room exploded. He was unable to arouse anyone in the house when the accident occurred, and rushed out of the doors and rolled in the snow in his effort to check the blaze of his burning clothes. The exposure had added to the seriousness of the condition occasioned by the severity of the burns and the large surface of the body burned.
He was brought to Bethel Hospital Friday about midnight where he received every medical attention and comfort possible in hopes that his life might be spared and lingered over three days, death releasing him from his sufferings today.
Mr. Mabery is an old resident of Newton and his tragic death is deplored by his many friends here. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and the lodge will participate at his funeral. A son who resides in New Mexico has been with him, having come here when his father's condition was known. Two daughters reside at a distance, and a brother George, is a resident of Newton.
The funeral will be held at the Duff undertaking parlor Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.
