At the age of 16, Adalbert Heinrich Wunder began a three-year course of study at Berlin's Royal Academy of Design along with private instruction from the highly respected Professor Herbig. This was followed by an additional two years at the Dresden Academy.

Adalbert immigrated to the US, possibly as early as 1848, and settled in Hartford, Connecticut, and began a successful career as a portrait artist (The 1866 Hartford City Directory has him listed as: A. Wunder, Artist, 20 John St.)

In 1868, he moved on to Springfield, Illinois, and spent considerable time in St. Louis, Missouri, and Chicago, Illinois, where he died in 1905. He also lived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, for a time.

He was married 4 times and had 8 children.
