Born in Ireland, in 1846 he emigrated to New York. He came to California at the peak of the gold rush in 1849, where he became a business man and money lender.

He was married to Elizabeth Green.

The Montgomery Chapel contains the mortal remains of Alexander Montgomery, a major patron of San Francisco Theological Seminary: An Institution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Located in San Anselmo, Marin County, California.

Came to California in early 1849 for the gold rush, but ended up making a lot of money as a lender to farmers in the Colusa area beginning in the mid 1850's, where he met his wife to be Elizabeth Green.
In the late 1880's he donated $250,000 to the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, where three buildings and a chapel were built with the funds. The chapel was not finished by his death, so he was first buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in San Francisco before his body was removed to the San Anselmo chapel.
