P. Barshaw Passes Away
Assisted To Build First Log Chapel at Notre Dame
Death of Peter Barshaw, sr.
Peter Barshaw passed away at 9 o’clock Friday night at the home of his son, Joseph Barshaw, 213 West Marion street, aged 75 years, two months and 11 days. He had been ill for three months with asthma, and the end came peacefully and relieved him from his sufferings.
Mr. Barshaw was born in Canada, July 12, 1828 and came to the United States many years ago and located in South Bend in 1841. For the past four years he has resided with his son. Mr. Barshaw was connected with the early history of South Bend and assisted in building the first little log church at Notre Dame, and was married in the same church. He worked for many years as a carpenter at Notre Dame. His wife died March 30, 1896. Seven children are left, they are Charles, of the west; Peter, Louis, Armadour, of South Bend; Joseph of Mishawaka; Mrs. William Nedeau, of Oklahoma; Mrs. Michael Haft, of Bluffton, Ind.; Flavian Barshaw, of Kettle Falls, Wash.; Mrs. Peter Champagne, of Chicago, and Mrs. Placile Lario, of South Bend.
The funeral will be held at St. Joseph Catholic church, South Bend, Monday morning at 10 o’clock, the Rev. Peter Lauth, officiating. The remains will be laid to rest in Cedar Grove cemetery.

The date of his birth is incorrectly cited in the above obituary. He was born 20 July 1828 and baptized as Pierre Bergeron at the parish church of Saint-Cesaire, Rouville, Quebec the same day, the son of of Jean Baptiste Bergeron (later Barshaw and Bashaw) and Marie Susanne Boutier Routhier. He married Roseanne Lafountain at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, St Joseph, Indiana on Jan. 23, 1851. He and his family changed their names to Barshaw at a later date. His St Joseph County death certificate and obituary confirmed his burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery on 26 Sept. 1904.
