Note: Further research shows that America Powell's first husband, Christopher C. Cowen, was born in Kentucky in 1827 or 1828. In the 1850 census he is found living in Eldorado County, CA, age 23, working as a gold miner. In 1870 he is living alone in Wakanda Township, Carroll County, Missouri. Occup: Farmer. America Powell's parents and her siblings are living nearby.
In 1874, Christopher and America Cowen become the parents of a baby girl, Nancy (Nannie) Ann Cowen, (1874-1951) who eventually is married to Lyman Brady Newnham
Christopher Carl Cowen and America Powell were evidentliy dicorced sometime before her marriage to James Bolen Rose.
Christopher Cowen later relocated to Rich Hill, Bates County, Mo, and died at the approximate age of 75 on the 12th of July, 1912, at the Missouri State Hospital at Nevada, Vernon County, MO. His remains were sent to Rich Hill, Mo. for burial.
