Nobility. Son of Johann III of Kleve and Maria of Jülich-Berg. He succeeded his father as Duke of Jülich-Kleve-Berg in 1539. In 1541 he arranged the marriage of his sister Anna with Henry VIII. In June 1541 he married Jeanne d'Albret, the thirteen year old daugther and heir of Henri II of Navarra. The marriage was never consumated and was anulled on October 22nd, 1545. In the following year he married Maria of Habsburg who bore him seven children.
