On May 27, 1861, Adams enlisted as a private in Company G of the 15th Mississippi Infantry in Corinitta, Mississippi. Not much is known about his experiences during the War, other than he was taken prisoner when the 15th Mississippi Infantry surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865. He was later paroled at Grenada, Mississippi on May 18. In 1873,
