John Thomas Cox married Camelia Winchester Dec. 27, 1883, in Bartholomew Co., Indiana.

Friday, Dec. 24, 1943
Evening Republican, Columbus, Indiana
Thomas Cox, 89, former sheriff of Bartholomew county, died unexpectedly about 8:45 o'clock Thursday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Aldenhagen near Waymansville, where he had been residing. He had been bedfast with arthritis for five years, but seemed to be in his usual health Thursday and was listening to his radio before retiring for the night. Mr. Aldenhagen went to his room to see that he was all right before going to bed and found him dead.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Barkes and Albright funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Orman P. Sloat, Methodist minister of the Ogilville charge. Burial will be made at Garland Brook cemetery.

The casket will be open after noon Saturday at the funeral home, where friends may call until the services.

Mr. Cox was active in Democratic politics all his life and served one term as sheriff from 1896 to 1898. He also served as trustee of Ohio township for five years and one term as county commissioner.

He was born in North Carolina but came to this county at the age of 14 and spent his early life here. Later he lived in Texas and Oklahoma for a number of years before coming back to Columbus. His wife died 20 years ago and after that he made his home with his children.

Besides Mrs. Aldenhagen, he is survived by two sons, Archie Cox, near Nortonburg, assistant cashier at the Irwin-Union Trust company, Leslie Cox, near Mount Zion, former state representative, and six grandchildren.

A grandson, Robert Aldenhagen, is serving with the Navy in Hawaii at the present time.
