Garret Duffy likely arrived in NYC 12 Oct 1832 traveling from Liverpool on the Vestal. Ships starting in Liverpool stopped in Ireland to pick up passengers. He was 21. He was not traveling with Duffy family members.

He was born c. 1812 but the date is slippery in the record. Born c. 1811 in immigration record. Born c.1810 per 1860 Census and c.1813 per 1870 Census. Born c.1817 per death record which listed him as having been age 70 rather than specifying a year.

He lived in Jersey City, NJ his whole life in US. The first record of him in the US is the birth of son Edward in 1844. He has not been found in the 1850 Census.

He married Johanna Garvan Duffy before 1844. She arrived from Ireland in 1841. She was born in 1812 per her baptism record in Ireland.

There are two other Duffys of his generation listed in this plot on the cemetery cards: James "Jas" Duffy 1819-1869 and Edward Duffy 1812-1863, both born in Ireland. Were they his brothers?

He was listed in Jersey City Directories and in the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses variously as a carman, teamster, driver, and/or labourer. (Mistakenly indexed as Daniel in Ancestry.com index for 1860 Census. Bad writing misread.) Not found in the 1850 or 1880 Censuses.

There were at least five children:
* Edward Duffy 1844-1880 (Edward Duffy hanged himself in NYC on Chambers St .)
* Margaret Duffy Hayward 1846-1919
* Mary Ann Duffy Fitzgerald 1848-1917 married James J. Fitzgerald. Listed in censuses as being born in 1850 although she was baptized at St. Peter's 10 Dec 1848. William Fitzgerald 1878-1881 is buried with the Duffys.
* Catherine d.1852, likely born between 1849 and 1852 considering the birth years of other children but only the burial card has been found.
* Ellen Duffy 1854-1882

DeerfieldmomNJ says: "No headstone. The first two graves off the path are unmarked. Duffy is the second in the row is to the right of Thompson in 26 South A. Johanna is in 24 South C per cemetery card. He is in 24 South A per cemetery card.
