Son of Pedro and Gertrudis Canales. Per his military paperwork, he was born in La Cavada, Riotuerto, Santander, Spain. He became a naturalized citizen in 1916.

He married Floripes "Flora" Higuera, on September 29, 1914, in Berlin, Washington, Vermont.

He died of pulmonary tuberculosis and silicosis, both considered a "curse of the trade" for granite industry workers of the time.
