May Olive Flickinger, Galesburg Chapel 91, of Williamsfield, Ill., died at 5:45 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013 at home.
She was born May 31, 1921 in Galesburg, Ill. the daughter of Clyde M. and Jessie May Mackie Huber. She married Charles E. Flickinger on July 4, 1943 in Williamsfield. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1993.
May is survived by one son, Kenneth (and Dina) Flickinger of Chillicothe, Ill.; one daughter, Karol (and Chip) Smith-Murdock of Williamsfield; one brother, John R. (and Eda) Huber of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Deborah King of Galesburg; five grandchildren, Kendra (and Michael) Betz of Knoxville, Ill., Jason (and Beth) Flickinger of Andalusia, Ill., Charles Kevin Flickinger of Galesburg, Dedra (and Brad) Mannon of Abingdon, Ill., and Derek Smith of Wataga, Ill.; nine great grandchildren, Tyler, Nathan, Logan, Jacob, Grace, Justin, Emma, Annabelle May, and Morgan; and a special friend, Wayne Carlson of Williamsfield. She was preceded in death by one brother, William Huber; one granddaughter, Karla May Benson; and a son-in-law, Tom Smith.
She graduated from Williamsfield High School in 1939 and the University of Illinois in 1943. May worked for the USDA Laboratory in Peoria for nine years. May worked for Brimfield Elementary School as a teacher and teacher's aide for 50 years, retiring in 2011.
She was an active member of the Williamsfield United Methodist Church, Williamsfield Legion Auxiliary, Spoon River D.A.R., and Good Sam's Camping Club.
4-H was an important part of May's life. Growing up she received numerous awards for her projects, she lived in the 4-H House in college, and she served as a 4-H leader in her adult years.
May was a loving woman who had a passion for family, teaching, camping, reading, sewing, baking, and a deep interest in Native American culture.
