"John Piombo, an Italian boy, six years of age, was killed Sunday afternoon by the accidental discharge of a shot-gun in the hands of Giovanni Deparvoli, in the house of Passalaqua, the Italian gardener, three miles from town. The accident occurred at half-past twelve o'clock. Deparvoli had loaded his gun to go hunting and had it on his knees putting a cap on the nipple. Young Piombo was standing close by, Passalaqua also being in the same room. The light was dim in the room and Deparvoli turned the gun around to see better. The hammer slipped from his thumb and fell. Though it struck his finger it also hit the cap hard enough to explode it, and the gun went off. All of the charge entered the right temple of the boy, killing him instantly. / Coroner Topley was summoned, and about half-past five o'clock in the afternoon went out to hold an inquest. A jury was impanelled consisting of the following persons: Nicholas Clavo, G. Braghetta, F. Passalaqua, Giovanni Batista, L. Brizzolara, Federigo Pieri, S. Moria, N. Passalaqua. / Deparvoli testified to the facts stated above. / B. Passalaqua testified that he was standing at a table preparing some salad in the same room with Deparvoli and the boy. When he heard the report of the gun, looked around and saw the boy falling to the floor. / A verdict of accidental death was returned by the jury, in accordance with the facts given. The body of the deceased was taken to San Francisco this morning, and will be buried by the side of his mother. His father is a wood sawyer employed at Georgia street wharf. Passalaqua was the boy's godfather, and had been keeping him at the ranch." ~Vallejo Evening Chronicle, Feb. 14, 1876, p. 3

Info from cemetery records: John Pieombo-- Son of Giuseppi & Augustina. Died of gun shot wound, 14 Feb 1876. Native of San Francisco. Aged 6y 2m 22d.

Originally buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery (SF/defunct). Removed & re-interred at Holy Cross T 16 12 g8 on 11 Jun 1901, along with his mother Augustina, and joining his recently deceased brother Frank.

----------------

Note: Removal records, available from online sources, indicate that John & Augustina were removed from Calvary to this T-section plot at Holy Cross on 11 Jun 1901. However, John's 1940 Calvary removal project card confusingly lists 3 removal notations: (i) [Remarks] 6/11/01 Removed to Holy Cross to G-21-38-1/2, (ii) Holy Cross Cemetery Date of Re-Burial 9/19/13 T-16-12-8, and (iii) [Nature of Find] Removed to H. C. during the erection of St. Elizabeth's Hospital in 1927. The latter (1927) is incongruous, but John, Augustina & Frank may have been buried at the G-section plot initially then reburied at T-section, since the logbook entry for Frank's 1901 interment has a correction on his plot that appears to correspond. And in the logbook entry for (Frank & John's dad) Joseph's 1910 interment at Holy Cross, it only lists the G-section plot without correction to T-section.
