He was a school teacher for eight years, teaching in Drake, North Dakota and Norwayne High School in Ohio and then worked for Hallock Properties for over 25 years, retiring at age 62. Jim was an American patriot and a US Army sergeant. He served his country during WWII all over Europe, was a member of the US Army in the Occupation of Germany and was in the Battle of the Bulge. As a member of the 78th Infantry Division, 309th Regiment Jim earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star. He holds lifetime memberships in the local chapters of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 78th "Lightning" Division Association and has held leadership roles in those organizations. Jim was a long-time board member of Veterans Memorial Hall and the Medina Co. Veterans Service Commission, where he was proud to assist local veterans in his community and was instrumental in bringing the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery to Medina County. He was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 2005.
Jim was the loving father of Judy Sleek of Douglasville, GA, George Anderson of Merdan, CT and Patti (Marc) Randolph of Seville; dear grandfather of Brittany (Wes) Sleek, Joanna (Torre) Langley, Caroline Sleek, George (Donna) Anderson, Jr., Jamie Anderson, Kristen Anderson and James Rohrer; great-grandfather of Annabelle and Savannah Langley, and Nicolas and Jeffrey Anderson; and brother Robert (Janie) Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Georgana in 2011; and grandsons Steven Andrew Sleek and Jeffrey Daniel Anderson and his sister Ardys Swanson.
Services will be held 12:30 pm, Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina. Pastor Jeffery Kolodziej will officiate. Burial with full military honors will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9:00 pm.
