Josie Irvin Phillips, 78, died Saturday night at her home, in Normal. Mrs. Phillips lived in Normal almost all her life.

Josephine Denny was born July 31, 1864, daughter of Harrison and Martha Denny. Her father was a native of Scotland.

The family lived near Mackinaw and Allentown.

She married Otis Irvin on Dec. 24, 1885. Mr. Irvin was associated with the Bloomington and Normal street railway. He died in 1895.

In 1901 she married James E. Phillips, a second lieutenant in the Grand Army of the Republic. He died in 1917.

Surviving are two sons, Frank L. Irvin and the Rev. Delmar V. Irvin; and a daughter, Hazel Irvin. here is one granddaughter and a sister, Miss Effie Denny.

Phillips attended Illinois State Normal university and taught school before her marriage.

She was an early member of the Normal Christian church.
