At age 30 enlisted on November 1, 1862, and was mustered in as a private on November 16, 1862, in Co. A, 34th Iowa Infantry. He was transferred to Co. D, 34th Consolidated Battalion of the Iowa Infantry, Nov. 12, 1864; he was transferred to Co. D, 34th and 38th Iowa Infantry Regiments, Consolidated, on Jan. 1, 1865, and mustered out on August 15, 1865, at Houston, TX.
He suffered from sunstroke on the march at Yazoo City, Carrollton, LA.

He was a member of Gen. Hazen G.A.R. Post #258 Kansas

Married Sarah Ann Koons 1 Aug 1853 in Marion Co., Iowa. Married Elizabeth (Beyke) Graves about 1898 in Kansas.
Son of James McKinney ca1794-1852 and Rachel Carr ca1814-aft 1860; married 28 Oct 1829 Morgan Co., IN.
