Aaltje was born in Rotsterhaule, Schoterland. Odd by American custom, she was the 5th child, all of whom were named Aaltje Jochems, of the twelve children born to Jochem Berends Ketellapper & Geertje Martens Groen! This was often the custom during this time when a family suffered the loss of a child in this remote, northern part of Holland.
