Cptn Charles Samuel Manville was born at St Ours, Quebec Canada. He was the son of Vital Miville, Mainville and Marie Theotiste Bibeau . His siblings were Antoine Vital Miville/ Mayville, Peter Manvill, and Louisa Miville Abair.
He married Adeline Bernier in 1856 at Immaculate Conception Parish, Ira, St. Claire Co. MI, 1856. They lived in Anchorville, MI and later moved to Toledo OH. Charles was a Great Lakes and Lake Champlaign ship captain and sailor. He sailed the Schooner St. Peter as first mate with his brother-in-law Cptn Francis Abair who was the builder and owner. He was also the Captain of the John Wesley which he sailed from Toledo to Lake Champlaign loaded with lumber. In the 1850's he sailed out of New Baltimore MI. His four children were Charles Samuel (CS) Manville . ,Adaline " Addie" Manville, Julia Manville and Peter Noah Manville. He had a white goatee and that is why he was called "Uncle Sam."
