His yacht he owned the Sabelo was actually off the coast of New Jersey at sea. It seems he like to sit on a rail and smoke a cigarette. We are all warned those things will kill...yet that means harmful to the lungs and cancer. Not thought of as overboard and lungs filling with water. There was a search for him to no avail. Amphibious planes, the Coast Guard, and his personal friend then New York Govenor Franklin D Roosevelt sent the USS Los Angeles. It was said a staff of the newspaper he was chairman of the Baltimore Sun tried to disguise his guest aboard the yacht, a Mrs. Walter J Lord being an elderly cousin. This was done or tried, to avoid scandal. Mount Black in Antarctica was named for him by Richard Evelyn Byrd because he financed a 1928 Antarctic expedition. The town of Van Lear, Kentucky is named after him because of his involvement with Consolidation Coal Company. The Crater class cargo ship SS Van Lear Black was named after Van Lear Black as well. He was considered the wealthiest person in Maryland. He purchased the Shrine of Saint Anthony [AKA estate "Folly Quarter" in Ellicott City, Maryland] in 1910 and had it restored. Then he used it to entertain his political and publishing guests. He married Jessie Gary the daughter of James A Gary. They had four children: Van Lear Black Jr., T. Buchanan Blakiston, Alexander Bullock, Gary Black, and Mrs. Frederick Bindy. His parents were H Crawford and Ida [Perry] Black.
