William Eli Ballengee married 2x first to Mary Jane Johnson, whom he had 2 children , John.R. & his sister Julian Ann. Mary died of complications of childbirth. he later married Elizabeth Garten. Wm Eli's father is UNKNOWN as is ALL of his mother's children. (Some call her Mary Jane NORRIS Ballengee which is not correct. This name comes from ONE source that said her son Henry Harrison's death certificate names his father as Norris. This has NEVER been proven, and he may well be, but there is no proof of a marriage or of this man. Wm Eli and his brother John M. and sister Elizabeth all have UNKNOWN or blank areas for FATHER on documents. I was under the impression that John Masten was a cousin of Wm. Eli's, but after much research by Gaye Whitehead, Ralph Harris, Bob Fields & myself, we gather he was born of Mary A. "Polly" Ballengee, never married daughter of Susannah Ballengee daughter of Isaac & Jane Graham Ballengee. His sister Elizabeth and John Masten also have Mary A. (father unknown) as their parents. One thing for sure NO Paternal Ballengee DNA in my line, Wm Eli my ggrandfather, and his brother John Maston's line.
According to articles in Summers County West Virginia History, 1994 by The Summers County Historical Society (PP 133-135), Henry Harrison Ballengee is brother to "Eli Ballengee 12/13/1821-6/13/1900" who is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Ballengee, Summers Co, West Virginia.
Wm Eli fist married Mary J. Johnson, daughter of Reuben. on Jan 11 1843 and they had two children together before she died of childbirth complications after the birth of her daughter Julian (Julia)

He remarried Oct. 16 1847 to Elizabeth Garten daughter of Richard and Mary Melinda "Milly" Long Garten. They had the following children:

Sarah Melinda B. Nov 8 1848 Greenbrier Monroe Co. West Virginia,now Va. She is listed in the 1850 & 1860 census.
