(This is my grandfather.)...My father, Fred B Ballard Jr. (1929-1987) wrote this about his father sometime in 1987....

Fred Berry Ballard was my father and a highly respected Judge in Chattanooga TN. Dad was born at the family home on Fork Creek in Monroe County near Madisonville, the youngest child of William L. and Margaret Willson Ballard. He graduated from Hiwassee College near Madisonville and came to Chattanooga in 1912 and received an LL.B. degree from the Chattanooga College of Law in 1914 at the age of twenty-two. Dad was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from September 18,1917, until his discharge on December 6, 1918.

After his military service Dad practiced law in partnership with L.D. Miller in Chattanooga until Miller was appointed Judge in the Criminal Court. Mr Miller was best man when Dad married my Mother,Evalena Ewing, in Dayton Tn. on October 20, 1920. When Mr Miller returned to Chattanooga that evening he found that his son, L.D. Miller Jr. had been born during the day. Dad continued to practice law until 1939 when he was appointed Judge of the Circuit Court by Governor Prentice Cooper.

I remember my Dad as being a very honest and straight-laced individual but always fair in his judgements. He and Mother were a great combination and we had a happy home. Dad took pride in being a judge and often brought his law books home to study. I am sure Dad and Mother made many sacrifices for the family and children as we grew up but I can recall no complaints. Our family had its share of joy and sadness and tears and laughter but I remember only the joy and laughter
.
Dad was a large person, weighing 220 pounds and being five feet nine inches tall. He always enjoyed eating but developed diabetes in later life from being overweight. However, I do not recall him being sick. My father died in his sleep during the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 11, 1958.This occurred only a few months after my Mother's death.
