Polly was the daughter of Samuel H. and Tabitha Branham Davis, both from Virginia.
(In some records, Polly's maiden name is erroneously given as "Doeman" or "Dorman". However, multiple family records, and our personal knowledge of our family name, have verified that her maiden name was Davis.)
She was married to Archibald Butt. Among their children was a son they called Archibald Davis. In later years, this son, "Arch", officially changed the family name from Butt to Butts.
Tragically, although Polly gave birth to six children, only three--Archibald Davis, William Hiram, and his younger sister, Burtha [sic], survived their childhood years. Life was hard, yes, and filled with sorrow. Yet they persevered.
This lady, Mary Jane "Polly" Davis Butt was my great-great-great-grandmother. She died nearly fifty years before my birth. How I wish I could know more of her!
