His will, written May 15, 1876, left all his personal and real property to his wife, Sarah E Cowan, and his children Charles W, and Clarence G Cowan, for their support during their lifetimes.
(His son Clarence died just weeks after William. His son Charles lived at least until 1940.)
William asked that W. M. Cowan and J. Mavens be executors of his will. The will was in probate court in August 15, 1876. Jesse Harvey, one of the witnesses of the will noted that he had known William for 9 years and was present at his death on or about May 18, 1876. J. P. Scholes, another witness to the will, noted that he was a physician, lived in Lowell, was age 39, knew W. P. during his lifetime, and attended him in his last sickness.
It is thought that he got his middle name from his mother's side of the family, as she had a brother named Pinkney.
His son, Charles Walter Cowan, born in 1872 in Cherokee County, Kansas, was living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1940. It is not known when he died. However, his wife, Elsie Anna Meisner Cowan died January 11, 1944 in Tuscaloosa.
