Matt was a long-time foreign language teacher at Odessa College. He was a graduate of Stanford University where he earned a Master's degree and taught Portugaese while pursing studies toward His doctrate, he also, attended the University of Utah. He taught Spanish at Purdue University and English at the instituto Cultural Brastil as well as for two years as its director.

Thomas Matthew Rees, 85, of Odessa, a language professor, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at the Hospice House. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the Rev. Alan Pitt officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in Salt Lake City. He served in the Army and Marines.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Celestia "Tess" Rees of Odessa; sons, Brigham Dean Rees of Manassas, Va. and Joel Matthew Rees of Amagasaki, Japan; daughters, Sharla Rees of Salt Lake City, Laurie Rees Bush of Atlanta, RaeLynn Rees Shattuck of Balch Springs and Ginette Rees Rogers of Roosevelt, Utah; sister, Winifred Rees Erickson of Salt Lake City; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
