Fred G. Alway, a long time resident of Susanville, died Sunday morning, Oct. 25, 2009 at the age of 95. He was born on Dec. 13, 1913 in Castella, Calif., the second son to Gordon and Josephine Alway.
When he was a teenager the family moved to Susanville, established a home on Johnstonville Road and he graduated from Lassen Union High School, Class of 1931. He then went to work for the former Fruit Growers Supply company and gained experience as a heavy equipment operator. It was this experience that qualified him for acceptance into the Seabees, U.S. Navy, during World War II. He was assigned to the 106th Naval Construction Battalion and spent the time between May 1943 and the end of the war in September 1945 building military bases and airfield on islands in the South Pacific Ocean.
After the way he returned to Fruit Growers in the logging division of the company. When the company closed in the early 1960's he was in charge of the logging truck operation. At this time he then began employment in the Bureau of Land Management and worked out of the Susanville office until his retirement in 1978.
Fred married the former Henirette S. Hagata, of Willow Creek Valley on Oct. 31, 1940. She died in March 2006.
He is survived by his daughter, his son Jay, his grandchildren include; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, plus several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Harry and Jim Alway, and his sister Theo Beebe.
Fred was a past member of the Elks Lodge.
Burial will be at the Diamond Crest Cemetery.
