He was one of the four young people who were drowned in Potato Creek on the 14th of June 1916 when the car in which they were riding plunged into the creek after a downpour of rain had just washed out the bridge. The boys, Fred York and Cyde Center were found the next morning, but one of the girls, Annie Crawford, wasn't found until the 9th day, and Mabel Porter was found about 4 weeks later all the way down at Parksville dam near Benton. Mabel is also buried in Old Ocoee, memorial # 11005846.
It was said that the girls were from Johnson City and were working here as cooks, probably in one of the hotels that kept copper miners. The boys were from local families.
