Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Friday, April 25, 1924:
Jacob A. Abert, long time resident of Alhambra passed away at his home on Thursday morning at 7:30 o'clock, following a lingering illness extending over almost two years. Death was due to a malignant growth.
In December, 1922, his health failed and he was sent to a St. Louis hospital where he underwent an operation. He rallied and for a time it was thought he was improving. He was again taken to the hospital last December but he failed to improve and was again brought home, where his death occurred.
Mr. Abert was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Abert, and was born September 22, 1870, at St. Jacob. At the time of his death he was aged 53 years, 7 months and 2 days old.
At the age of 10 years he moved with his parents on a farm near Alhambra and has followed the occupation of farming all his life. In 1885 he was confirmed in the Evangelical faith by Rev. Klick, and since that time he has been a faithful member.
In 1896, he was united in marriage to Miss Annie L. Koch and nine children were born to the union. Those who survive, besides his wife, are Hilda, Bertha, Gusta, Mamie, Esther, Fred and Alfred Abert. There are also three brothers and four sisters. They are: August and Emil Abert of Kaufman; Fred Abert and Mrs. Mary Conrad of St. Louis, Mrs. Louisa Klaus, Highland; Mrs. Anna Stille of Sugar City, Colo., and Mrs. Tillie Schokley of Ordway, Colorado.
Mr. Abert was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen for a number of years, as a member of the Marine camp.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, at 1 o'clock from the residence thence to the Alhambra Evangelical church, Rev. Haller officiating. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.
