James, age 21, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 11 September 1861 in Houston. He was mustered as a 3rd Lieutenant in Company I, Terry's Texas Rangers, 8th Texas Cavalry. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant by January 1862 and 1st Lieutenant on 7 May 1862 in Dalton, Georgia. Rank shown on CMSR as Captain when he retired (R.I.C.) on 4 March 1865 due to the battle wounds and broken leg. James reached home in Texas in July 1865.

Rank of Colonel was probably obtained after the war from his membership in a Confederate Veteran Camp which does not relate to his rank in the War Between the States. James was a member of Terry Lodge, Regimental, Masonic Chapter.

Received slight wound to heel at Murfreesboro, TN on December 31, 1862 or January 1, 1863.
Received furlough in early 1863 and returned to TX. Returned to regiment in June 1863 with ten recruits after being published as a deserter on May 30, 1863.
Wounded - leg badly broken below the knee - near Newnan, GA on July 30, 1864.
