EL PASO, Texas 1956—Henry C. Lawrence, 83, of 8099 Highway 80 East died in Hotel Dieu Hospital Friday. He had been a resident of El Paso for 19 years.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Louis Lawrence and Molly Boyd, he moved to St. Louis in 1900 and worked for thirty-seven years as Credit Manager and in 1905 as a director and secretary-treasurer of the Blackwell Wielandy Printing and Stationery Company. He developed the firms slogan "Everything New From Everywhere." He retired in 1937 and moved to El Paso to live near his brother.
Mr. Lawrence is author of four books: Making Him Pay: Exemplifying the Evolution of Conciliation, 1908; Turning Him Down: Credit Letters Pertaining to Declined Orders, 1908; Making Him Buy, The Selling End of It, 1910; and Cash Discount Piracy, 1919, all from Consolidated Publishing Company.
Uniquely, he won the $5,500 prize, valued at $86,000 today, in the January 1922 Thomas Edison Diamond Disk Phonograph promotional contest. Contestants were judged based on the best catchy phrase or slogan embodying the new Edison Phonograph. Results were announced in the March/April 1922 Along Broadway Magazine. His catchy slogan: "A Fireside Encore of the Artists."
He was a member of York Rite Masonic bodies of St Louis, Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 40, Moolah Shrine Temple of St. Louis, and Knights Templar of Missouri.
He is survived by brother, Charles H. Lawrence of El Paso. Funeral services will be held Monday April 23 at 11 a.m. in the Harding and Orr Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth L. Rice officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
