The second child of William and Martha Campbell, David immigrated from Northern Ireland to New York in his early twenties, where he worked as a saddle and harness maker.

He married Mary Jane McLeod around 1840. They had at least 5 children together, 3 of whom died in childhood.

David died of consumption on Feb. 1, 1856 in Newburgh, NY. Mary Jane followed just 7 months later, leaving their two surviving children, Anna and Mary Jane, to be raised by their uncle Richard Campbell.
