Found the following article on Page 2 of the Charlotte Western Democrat December 9, 1862
Found Dead. A soldier of youthful appearance was found dead in the woods recently near the house of Mr. John N Brandon, in Halifax County, Va., a few miles distant from Milton, NC. The Milton Chronicle gives the following particulars:
His name and residence are unknown, but a letter (without postmark) was about his person, purporting to be a letter from father to a son; this letter appears to be written from Union County, NC Sept 10, 1862 by John A. Nance to Wyatt D. Nance a soldier in the 48th Regiment NC Troops. The young man had light hair and fair skin, but no flesh, as he seemed to be nothing but skin and bone a circumstance that warrants the belief he died of starvation! He had a silver watch, one dollar in money and a handkerchief with a moiety of salt tied up in one corner. He was decently buried by the neighbors and his father or relatives can get his watch and money by addressing Captain Biven M. Oliver, or Thomas S. Brandon at Milton, NC.
Wyatt D. Nance was the son of John A. Nance and Elizabeth Austin Nance of Union County, SC
He was born in 1838 in Union County, NC He was conscripted as a private in Company E 48th Regiment North Carolina Troops CSA on September 23, 1862 Wyatt deserted his unit on October 24th, 1862 and died of starvation in Halifax County, Virginia.
