Adam Mitchell was born in Guilford Co NC, son of Adam and Elizabeth McMachen Mitchell.
In 1781 he witnessed the Battle of Guilford Courthouse which was fought on his fathers plantation. Adam and his siblings hid in the Springhouse with his mother and Grandmother Margaret Mitchell. When found by British troops, Margaret hid the family trunk with pewter and the bible under her petticoat. His father Adam Sr was captured by the British but later released. Their farm fields now were turned into a grave site, they did not feel they could farm the ground.
In 1782 they sold the plantation and moved to Washington Co Tennessee, Jonesborough where Adam's maternal Grandfather John McMachen had moved in 1774 with Elizabeth's sisters after her mother died. John McMachen was the first county registar of Washington Co TN.
The Mitchell's were active in the Presbyterian Church. Adam Jr was a elder in the Presbyterian Church of Jonesborough.
When a new church was built in 1850, the following was quoted during the dedication " The name Mitchell should be held as sacred here. And whether we are reminded of old Adam Mitchell, facing the winter blast to attend the house of God at a distance of 10 miles, and afterwards spending labor and property to build a house of worship in his immediate neighborhood, himself the very life of and soul of the Hebron Church, or of the younger Adam Mitchell, a elder here nearly 30 years".
Later when he relocated to Charleston Il he helped form the Presbyterian church in the town.
In 1796 Adam returned to Guilford Co NC and married Martha Gray. This may be about the same time, Adam Sr and sons returned to Guilford Co. to try to resolve ownership of their 107 acres, after it was given back to them.
In Oct 1825 while still living in Washington Co TN. Adam wrote a Petition to free a slave named Phyllis. In the petition he quoted the Declaration of Independence and stated "that slavery has been transmitted by our ancestors does not excuse in any degree the great evils-when I shall by my Judge-how many of you possessed souls- I wish to answer NO ONE".
After 1830, Adam moved his family to Coles Co IL where his brother John, and his brother Robert's children had moved to in the 1820's.
On May 5, 1836 Adam was appointed President of the committee to incorporate the town of Charleston IL.
Aug 2, 1845 Adam Mitchell is listed as one of the Charter members of the Charleston Masonic Lodge #35 and was appointed Junior Ward.
Martha and Adam had 8 children who were born in Washington Co TN all of whom moved with their parents to Charleston, Coles Co IL.
Adam died in 1860, date unknown.
