John Jefferson COOKE,

Son of George W. Sr., and Rutha Simmons Cooke.

Loving husband of Emily Grant Cooke whom he married on on 21 Aug 1853. They were the parents of ten children.

A Civil War soldier, he served the state of Georgia, enlisting in Company B, 32nd Infantry Regiment as a private on 6 May 1862. While in service he was wounded during the siege of Fort Wagner, SC on 18 July 1863. He was wounded in the left hand and lost three fingers to gangrene.

Private Cooke was furloughed from Lee Hospital in Columbus Georgia in 1864. He walked home to Harris County.

In 1877 he was appointed to postmaster of the Shiloh post office.
