A funeral for Robert Caldwell of Dayton will be held at 10:30 a.m. today in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, with the Rev. Max Schaefer of St. John Lutheran Church, McMinnville, officiating.

Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery.

Mr. Caldwell died March 16, 2000, in his home. He was 81.

He was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Newberg, the son of Robert M. and Amanda Campbell Caldwell. He moved in 1920 to McMinnville, where he was raised and educated.

He and Thelma Zentner were married June 16, 1940, in Sheridan.

He served in the Army in the Philippines during World War II. After the war he moved to Dayton. He was a machinist most of his life, working for Alderman Farms, Salem Iron Works and the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Mr. Caldwell built the first helicopter bucket used in fire fighting in Oregon. He retired from the state Forestry Department in 1979, after working there for 20 years. He also farmed from 1948 to 1986. He moved to a farm near Hopewell in 1961. He loved farming, fishing and camping, and belonged to the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol Clark of Amity; two sons, Larry Caldwell of Myrtle Creek and Ken Caldwell of Silverdale, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Holland.
