Margaret Lucy Breckinridge, age 98, of New Paltz, New York, peacefully passed away on Friday, June 10, 2011 at Woodland Pond of New Paltz. She was born on May 31, 1913, in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England, the daughter of the late John Raymond Smit and the late Madeline Monger Smith. As a young woman she came to the United States, where she married Henry Breckinridge and had her daughter Madeline. Henry predeceased Margaret, having passed away in 1960. Margaret was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Washington, DC, where she taught at St. Columba’s Preschool. Margaret is survived by one daughter, Madeline Houston Breckinridge of New Paltz, NY; two grandchildren, Ariana Rose Srey Poeu Breckinridge and Samuel Hayes Houston Breckinridge, of New Paltz, NY; two sisters, Phyllis Payne-Cook of London, England and Patricia Nicholas of Ampney Crucis, England; four step grandchildren, Louise, Margaret, Katherine and Susan, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, great grandchildren and friends. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a sister, Josephine Meakin, in 1998. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 12:30 PM at Christ the King Episcopal Church, 3021 State Route 213E, Stone Ridge, NY, with the Rev. Alison Quin, Rector, officiating. There will be a Memorial Service at St. John's Church in Washington, DC in the early Fall. Burial will occur at The Lexington Cemetery of Lexington, Kentucky in November of this year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 3240 “O” Street N.W., Washington, DC 20007 (202) 338-1796 or The Anderson Orthopedic Research Institute, 2501 Parkers Lane, Suite 200, Alexandria, VA 22306.
