William was the son of Robert O. Preyer who came to Greensboro when William was about 16 years old. His father had bought part of the Greensboro Sash, Door and Blind Co. Not long after that his father died and the lumber business was hit by a depression. Mr. Preyer gave up his plans to attend Trinity College(now Duke University) and first went to work for Guilford Lumber Co.
William married Mary Richardson June 15, 1916 in Greensboro, N.C. A couple years later he would quit his job and go work for his father-in-law at Vicks Chemical Co. During the great flu epidemic the company rapidly grew and became very successful. William would eventually become the president of the company from 1938- 1948.
