Carl Hatfield Jr.

Carl Hatfield Jr., 68, of Palm Desert, Calif., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003. He was born March 10, 1934 in Omaha, Neb., to Carl Hatfield Sr. and Signa Hatfield.

The family moved to Lakewood, Calif., in 1942, and then moved to Anaheim in 1947, where they opened a dry cleaning business, Hatfield Cleaners. Carl and his two brothers, Robert Lee and John Richard, all graduated from Anaheim Union High School, where Carl was named an All-American baseball player. He was one of the first employees when Disneyland opened, and served as a captain for the Jungle Boat Ride.

Mr. Hatfield entered the Marine Corps Reserve in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1964.

In 1959, he received his bachelor of arts degree in public administration from California State University-Long Beach. This precipitated his long career in city government. In 1960, he married Jeanne Bauman, also a resident of Anaheim.

In 1963, Mr. Hatfield left city government and opened his own public relations firm, which included work on some projects for his brother, Bobby Hatfield, who partners with Bill Medley to form The Righteous Brothers, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2001 (coincidentally, Carl's birthday).

Mr. Hatfield co-founded, co-published and served as editor of Orange County Magazine from 1965 to 1967.

He moved his family to Sandy, Ore., in 1967 and did public relations work for the Agri-Business Council until Sandy advertised for a city manager. On Jan. 1, 1973, he became Sandy's first city manager. The Hatfield family moved to Oakdale, Calif., on Feb. 16, 1976, where he served as the city administrator.

In March of 1979, the Hatfields moved to Ojai, where Mr. Hatfield served as Ojai's city manager until 1985. His wife, Jeanne, worked at The Oaks at Ojai, and later at The Palms at Palm Springs. He then served as city manager of Rancho Mirage from March of 1985 until October 1990.

Shortly after Mr. Hatfield left Rancho Mirage, he began showing symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and was diagnosed with the disease in February of 1992.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jeanne Ann Hatfield, of Palm Desert; son and daughter-in-law Jay Richard and Sheila Hatfield of San Diego; son Clayton Lee Hatfield of Palm Desert; brother Bobby Hatfield of Newport Beach; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John Richard Hatfield.

Memorial services will be held Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. at Desert Springs Church in Palm Desert. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of the Desert, and encourages those interested to participate in the Memory Walk for Alzheimer's on Feb. 8.

Arrangements are under the direction of Palm Springs Mortuary.
